PROJECT IDEA & LAUNCH
For our Start Small Dream Big project on “Saving Water”, we started the project rolling by contacting PUB, which provided the book “ A Wally Wally Adventure: The Suprise Visitor” and stickers with messages on saving water.
On World Water Day, we shared with the children the importance of water sustainability and why we celebrated it yearly. With the resources provided by the PUB, we read the story “A Water Wally Adventure: The Suprise Visitor” to the children. Along with the children, we discussed about the ways to save water and ended session with a pledge to conserve water. During the post activity, the children expressed their thoughts and feelings about conserving water on a drawing template given by the PUB. Children were enthusiastic in sharing their ideas to their peers.
We started our launch party in April by discussing the importance of water and how to save it. During the launch, the book “A Water Wally Adventure:The Suprise Visitor” was read to the children, followed by singing the song “Let’s Go Save Water”.Thereafter, children participated in a hands-on activity “fill-up bucket with water droplets” where they learnt the importance of how every drop counts. The launch party concluded with finger printing of the mascot, Water Wally. All the teachers and children participated actively and spontaneously during the session.
In May, children embarked on a fieldtrip to NEWater Visitor Centre where they attended a “Mini Rain Garden” workshop and learnt about the water cycle and the process of how used water is purified to become NEWater. Post trip, children discussed and shared about what they had learnt.
During the June school holiday, parents and children worked together on “Parent-child Art Activity” on water as part of the holiday homework. At the start of the new term, many children brought beautiful artworks to school that they had painstakingly completed with their parents.
As we came to the final stage of our project, we invited parents to our centre to share on how the project had helped their children in creating a better awareness of the importance of saving water, especially at home. The response was overwhelming and parents participated enthusiastically during the session. They shared tips on saving water by reusing water from the washing machine or washing of rice and vegetables to flush toilets and mop the floor. They also talked about how conserving water would lead to conserving the environment. The session ended with parents sharing and explaining the projects that they had completed with their children during the school holiday.
