SGM Murni - K1 Class: Wildlife Conservation 🌳🐅🐘🦍🌳

The children were introduced to the term “habitat” and identified parks and gardens as habitats for some animals and insects. They went outdoors to spot what belong and do not belong in those places, and identified them as “litter”. They cleaned up the place using gloves and trash bags. They want to help the animals have a clean home!

They were then introduced to the 3Rs concept- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. They brainstormed items in the classroom that can be reused and recycled. Using scrap materials, they designed the different types of animal habitats and wild animal masks.

From among the large amount of scrap materials that the K1s collected were felt papers. The K1s decided to upcycle them and turn them into flower brooches, by rolling strips of felt and pinning them. The teachers assisted them with the hot glue. The class decided to put these brooches up for sale to raise funds during our Fundraising Carnival in August.

In preparation for the fundraising event, the children explored with the different types of upcycle items created by their parents and friends. They identified the materials used and described how they were being upcycled to create new items. They also had the chance to practice “manning” their “booth” for the actual Fundraising.

They then write their pledges on how they can help make the environment clean and create a safe living space for animals. These pledges were displayed during the Sports Day event.
