This year our K1 children embarks on our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) in a fundraising event partnering with the Lion Befrienders Association. We began our session on 3rd April 2017. It all began when I read the book titled ‘Caring’ to the children. Upon reading the book, children made various definitions using their own words describing the word.
(Such as be good, showing good deeds, helpful, show love and kindness) We continued the following day when I brought a newspaper article on the increase of elderly population in Singapore during Current Issue lesson. The children moved on discussing on the above issue and they felt that the elderly needed more care than others as they were always sick, they are too old to be left alone and they needed care. As they were much involved with the issue, I initiated on the above for the SSDB project. The children agreed and we discussed on how to help the elderly and the support they needed.
The children brainstormed on helping the elderly and they came up with ideas such as a) raise fund b) donate food and clothes c) earning money for the elderly d) selling things to help the elderly
After much discussing, brainstorming and negotiating, the children have decided to sell cookies to raise funds to help the elderly on 11th April 2017.
However our discussion was put on a halt when most of the children were infected with chicken pox and some were not feeling well. We continued our discussion when all are back from medical leave on 9th May.
Children discussed further on how they going to sell the cookies such as: a) setting up station, b) taking orders from parents and c) making flyers / posters to attract buyers
