5th Story: PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Braddell Heights 417 - All About Cassowaries: Our Journey With The Cassowary

For this Start Small Dream Big project, both the K1 & K2 teachers decided to work with the Wildlife Reserves Singapore. Children from both classes love animals and are always curious to find out more about the endangered and unique species. After several brain storming sessions (first teachers worked with the principal and subsequently brain stormed with the children); it was decided that for this SSDB project, the children will focus on the cassowary.

“Major discussion going on”

The principal managed to arrange for a recce trip at Jurong Bird Park. The teachers were able to have close encounter of the cassowary, spoke to the zoo keepers to find out more about the cassowary.

“A photo with the cassowary!”

“The cassowary came up close!!”

These findings were shared with the children back in school.

“Children learning about cassowary”

A learning journey to the Jurong Bird Park was arranged.

“K2’s!”

“K1”s”

They were all very excited for the trip!

The trainers at the Bird Park conducted a tailor- made workshop for the children.

“The specially organized workshop just for the children”

“We can have a casque too!”

Children were shown artefacts of the cassowary, played games and they also got to feel the bones, feather, spikes and the cassowary green egg!

“This is the heavy bone!”

“Oooh… this is hard!”

“Wow, green egg!”

Children even took turns to feed the cassowary.

Back in school, children discussed in groups shared their findings and researched for more information about the cassowary. Arrangements were made for the children to hold an exhibition in school. Our wonderful partner, WRS, has even volunteered to do a show-and-tell during the exhibition in mid September.

“Invitation created for the exhibition”

Children shared n reinforced their learning as they had an interesting interview with the MP Mr Seah Kian Peng.

Mr Seah, do you know the different parts of a cassowary?

Come! Let’s take a selfie together! Cheese!

Token of appreciate presented to Mr Seah Kian Peng, MP for Marine Parade GRC.

We are confident our Cassowary exhibition will be a successful event!
