Helping children to retain and recall what they have learnt

Staff in this centre brainstorms together to formulate the curriculum for the children. The children learn through themes set for the whole year. The themes are different for each level as the staff wanted the children to learn new things and concepts as they progress. The unique thing about this centre is their emphasis on helping children to retain and recall what they have learnt in the 4 to 5 weeks that they have spent on each theme.

At the end of each theme, the children would need to work together on a writing or art and craft project to reflect and express what they have learnt from the theme. This same requirement applies to field trips that children embark on with their teachers. The older K1 and K2 children will have to write about their experiences while the younger Nursery children will tell about what they have seen during the trip.

On top of that, parents work with their children on home learning projects related to the themes. In this way, parents get to know what their children are learning in school and participate in their learning.

Children learn phonics as part of their curriculum from teachers who are trained to teach phonics to pre-school children. Teachers also conduct music and movement and gym lessons for children during curriculum hours.

The centre sets aside time on every Friday for teachers to read character building story books with children. After the reading session, children brainstorm and list the right and wrong actions related to the value that they have just learnt.

This centre has received the Good Practice Team Award for two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012.

Colourful Environment

The centre is beautifully decorated with pictures, art work and projects related to the themes that the children are learning. It is colourful and vibrant with well set-out corners in each class room. It has a dedicated music and movement and gym room.

The gym room has climbing, balancing equipment to help children develop their motor skills. On top of that, it has junior gym equipment like little treadmills, tricycles, basketball hoops and many more for the children to train their motor skills.

Caring Teachers

Parents here attest to the quality of the teachers in this centre. They find them to be caring, knowledgeable and effective teachers. Many parents have sought to enrol their children here even though they do not live nearby.
